Introduction

My name is Rachel Hwang and I am part of the class of 2019 at Wellesley College.  I am a prospective Physics major.  I was born in Columbus, Ohio but grew up in Campbell, California and I play field hockey for Wellesley.

Before coming to Wellesley, I had an idea of becoming a Mechanical Engineer after attending a summer program at UC Davis over the summer of 2014 for students interested in math and science.  The group I worked with were students interested in mechanical engineering, creating models of rockets, calculating errors in a catapult, working with MATLAB, and exploring the vast variety of machinery at UC Davis.  Since, I have become fascinated with laser cutters and 3D printers, and have wanted to become an engineer.

Growing up, I never knew what I would want to do for the rest of my life.  While reflecting on my childhood, I realized my favorite toys were the BRIO train set, an AquaPlay toy set, and Legos - all which focus on building and creating.  But coming to Wellesley, with no engineering department, I have decided to study Physics while continue taking engineering classes at Olin and MIT.  While I can get my physics degree at Wellesley, I plan to receive a degree in mechanical engineering through grad school.

My goals after taking ENGR 160 are to learn the fundamentals of engineering and to become a more creative and better thinker.  I am excited to work with SolidWorks and use a 3D printer.   By the end of the semester, I will have learned to use digital electronics and create simulations, which are not only useful for engineering, but for many jobs in the market today.
